Derinkuyu is home to the deepest underground city in Cappadocia, descending 8 levels (60 meters) underground. This ancient city could shelter up to 20,000 people along with their livestock and food stores.
History
Likely started by the Phrygians in the 8th-7th centuries BC and expanded by early Christians. The city has ventilation shafts, wells, storage rooms, stables, churches, and even a winery.
