Stops
Stop 1: Entrance & First Level
15 min
Enter through the narrow doorway that once held a massive rolling stone door. The first level contains stables for livestock - notice the feeding troughs and tie-rings carved into the rock. Animals were essential for survival during sieges.
Stop 2: Second Level: Living Quarters
15 min
The second level housed families in small cave rooms. Each family had their own space with storage niches carved into walls. The rooms are surprisingly comfortable with consistent 13°C temperature year-round.
Stop 3: Third Level: Kitchen & Storage
15 min
This level contains large kitchens with ventilation shafts for smoke, and massive storage rooms for grain and supplies. The city could sustain its population for months during invasions. Notice the wine press - even underground, Cappadocians made wine!
Stop 4: Fourth Level: Church
20 min
The cruciform church is the spiritual heart of the city. Early Christians worshipped here in safety during times of persecution. The arched ceiling and altar area show sophisticated carving techniques. Imagine the candlelit services held deep underground.
Stop 5: Deepest Open Level & Ventilation Shaft
25 min
Stand at the deepest point open to visitors, 55 meters below ground. Look up the central ventilation shaft - this engineering marvel brought fresh air to all levels. The city extends even deeper, with 8 levels reaching 60 meters total.
