Pharmacies
Pharmacies in Turkey (eczane) are marked with a red 'E' sign. A rotating duty pharmacy (nöbetçi eczane) is always open 24/7, even on holidays.
Duty Pharmacy Info
Ask your hotel or search 'nöbetçi eczane Nevşehir' online to find the current 24-hour pharmacy.
Health & Safety Tips
Tap water is generally safe but has a strong mineral taste. Most travelers prefer bottled water, which is cheap and widely available.
Sun protection is essential, especially in summer. Cappadocia sits at 1,000m altitude with little shade in the valleys. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and water.
The region sits at roughly 1,000-1,300m above sea level. If coming from sea level, allow a day to adjust before strenuous hikes.
Stick to marked trails in valleys. Unmarked cave entrances can be unstable. Always tell your hotel where you are hiking.
Stray dogs are common but generally friendly. Avoid approaching unfamiliar animals. Scorpions exist in rural areas — shake out shoes left outdoors.
Turkey is in an active seismic zone. Know your hotel's evacuation plan. In an earthquake: drop, cover, hold on.
Scam Awareness
Always confirm the taxi meter is running or agree on a price before departure. Airport-to-Göreme should be around $30-40 via shuttle.
High-pressure carpet shop sales are common. You are never obligated to buy. A polite 'no thank you' is enough.
Book tours through your hotel or a licensed agency. Avoid street touts offering 'special prices' — they often deliver poor-quality experiences.
Use bank-affiliated ATMs (inside or attached to a bank branch). Avoid standalone ATMs that may have skimming devices.
Never exchange money on the street. Use official exchange offices (döviz bürosu) or ATMs for the best rates.
Embassy & Consular Assistance
Your country's embassy or consulate in Ankara or Istanbul can assist with lost passports, legal issues, and serious emergencies. Contact information is available on your government's foreign affairs website.
Travel Insurance
We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical evacuation, trip cancellation, and emergency medical treatment. Turkey has excellent private hospitals, but treatment can be expensive without insurance.
General Safety Tips
- • Keep a digital copy of your passport, travel insurance, and important documents in your email or cloud storage.
- • Note down your hotel name, address, and phone number on a card you carry with you.
- • Turkey's country code is +90. For international calls, dial +90 followed by the area code.
- • Consider getting a local SIM card or eSIM for reliable communication in emergencies.
- • Share your travel itinerary with a trusted person back home.
- • Carry some Turkish lira in cash — card systems can go down in rural areas.
