The deepest underground city in Cappadocia, extending 8 levels (60 meters) underground. Features churches, storage rooms, stables, wineries, and could shelter 20,000 people. A tunnel connects to Kaymaklı 9 km away.
Historical Significance
Built by Phrygians around 8th century BC and expanded by early Christians fleeing Roman persecution. The city has sophisticated ventilation shafts and massive rolling stone doors.
Visiting Tips
Visit early morning to avoid crowds. The deeper levels are narrow - not suitable for claustrophobic visitors. A guide helps understand the complex layout.
