Avanos is the pottery capital of Cappadocia, located on the banks of the Kızılırmak (Red River). The town is famous for its traditional ceramics made from the red clay of the riverbed, a craft that has been practiced for over 4,000 years.
History
The Hittites first recognized the quality of Avanos clay. The pottery tradition continued through Greek, Roman, and Ottoman times, making it one of the world's oldest continuous pottery traditions.
