Turkey Visa & Entry Requirements

A straightforward guide to the e-Visa system, visa-free entry, passport rules, and passing through Turkish immigration on your way to Cappadocia.

Entry Requirements Overview

Turkey operates a straightforward entry system for tourists. Depending on your nationality, you will either enter visa-free, obtain an e-Visa online before travel, or apply for a sticker visa at a Turkish embassy. The vast majority of visitors to Cappadocia fall into the first two categories.

The Turkish e-Visa system launched in 2013 and has processed millions of applications. It is a simple online form that takes about 5 minutes to complete, with approval typically instant. You receive your visa as a PDF that you print or save on your phone. There is no embassy visit, no interview, and no passport submission required.

Turkey allows stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period for most tourist visas and visa-free entries. This is more than enough for a Cappadocia trip, which most visitors complete in 3-7 days. However, if you are combining Cappadocia with extended travel across Turkey, keep the 90-day limit in mind.

How to Apply for a Turkey e-Visa

  • 1Visit the official website at www.evisa.gov.tr -- this is the only legitimate site operated by the Turkish government
  • 2Select your nationality and travel document type (ordinary passport for most visitors)
  • 3Enter your planned arrival date in Turkey -- your e-Visa will be valid from this date
  • 4Fill in your personal details: full name (as it appears on your passport), date of birth, passport number, and passport expiry date
  • 5Provide your email address -- your e-Visa PDF will be sent here
  • 6Pay the visa fee using a credit or debit card (Visa, Mastercard, or UnionPay accepted)
  • 7Receive instant confirmation -- in most cases, approval is immediate and the e-Visa PDF is emailed within minutes
  • 8Print the e-Visa or save it on your phone -- you will need to show it at Turkish immigration alongside your passport

Pro Tip

Apply for your e-Visa at least 48 hours before your flight, even though approval is usually instant. In rare cases, applications require manual review, which can take up to 24 hours. Having a printed copy as backup is wise in case your phone dies at immigration.

Passport Validity Requirements

Turkey requires that your passport is valid for at least 60 days beyond the expiry of your visa or the duration of your intended stay. In practice, this means your passport should have at least 6 months of validity remaining from your date of entry to avoid any issues at immigration.

Your passport must also have at least one blank page for the entry stamp. Turkish immigration officers stamp passports on entry and exit, so two blank pages are ideal if you are making multiple border crossings.

If your passport is close to expiring, renew it before booking your trip. Turkish immigration officers have the discretion to deny entry if they judge your passport validity to be insufficient, even if you technically meet the minimum requirement.

Warning

Some travellers have been denied boarding at their departure airport because their passport did not meet Turkey's validity requirements. Airlines check this before you board. Renew your passport if it expires within 6 months of your travel date.

Length of Stay Rules

Most tourist visitors to Turkey -- whether visa-free or on an e-Visa -- are allowed to stay for up to 90 days within any 180-day rolling period. This is calculated as a rolling window, not a calendar year. If you stay for 90 days, you must leave Turkey and wait 90 days before returning.

The 90/180 rule applies across the entire Schengen-like calculation: any day you spend in Turkey within the past 180 days counts toward your 90-day allowance. This matters if you are making multiple trips to Turkey within the same year.

Overstaying your visa or visa-free period has consequences. You will be fined at the airport when departing (the amount depends on the length of overstay), and you may be banned from re-entering Turkey for a period ranging from 1 month to 5 years depending on the severity.

Documents to Have Ready

  • Valid passport (at least 6 months validity recommended, minimum 60 days beyond your stay)
  • Printed or digital copy of your e-Visa (if applicable to your nationality)
  • Return or onward flight ticket -- immigration may ask for proof you are leaving Turkey
  • Hotel reservation or accommodation address in Turkey
  • Travel insurance documentation (not mandatory but occasionally requested)
  • Proof of sufficient funds: credit card, bank statement, or cash (rarely checked but good to have)
  • Completed immigration form -- usually distributed on the plane or available at arrival kiosks

Watch Out for Scam Visa Sites

Numerous third-party websites rank highly in search results for "Turkey visa" and charge significantly more than the official fee. These sites are not affiliated with the Turkish government. They typically charge $80-150 for processing an e-Visa that costs $50-60 on the official site, and the processing is no faster.

The only official website for Turkish e-Visas is www.evisa.gov.tr -- note the .gov.tr domain. Any site ending in .com, .org, or another domain is a third-party service. While some of these are legitimate visa assistance services, they add unnecessary cost and an extra layer between you and the Turkish government.

If you are unsure whether a website is official, go directly to the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs website (mfa.gov.tr) and follow the e-Visa link from there.

Warning

Never pay more than $60 USD for a Turkish e-Visa. The official fee is $50-60 depending on nationality, and the official site (evisa.gov.tr) is the only place you should apply. Bookmark the URL before your trip to avoid clicking on sponsored search results that lead to overpriced third-party sites.

What to Expect at Immigration

If you are flying directly to Cappadocia via Kayseri (ASR) or Nevsehir (NAV) airports, immigration is handled at these small regional airports. Lines are generally short and processing is fast -- usually under 15 minutes. The officer will check your passport, scan your e-Visa (or verify your visa-free status), stamp your passport, and wave you through.

If you are arriving through Istanbul Airport (IST) or Sabiha Gokcen (SAW) and connecting to a domestic flight to Cappadocia, you will clear immigration in Istanbul. Istanbul Airport has dozens of immigration booths and electronic passport gates for eligible nationalities. Wait times vary but rarely exceed 30 minutes, even during peak hours.

Immigration officers may ask standard questions: how long you are staying, where you are staying, and the purpose of your visit. "Tourism" and "visiting Cappadocia" are perfectly sufficient answers. Have your hotel name ready. Officers are generally professional and efficient.

After immigration, collect your checked baggage (if any) and pass through the customs green channel ("nothing to declare") unless you have items that require declaration. Domestic flight connections within the airport do not require recollecting baggage at Istanbul if it was checked through.

Connecting Through Istanbul

Most international visitors reach Cappadocia by flying to Istanbul and then taking a domestic flight to Kayseri (ASR) or Nevsehir (NAV). If both flights are on the same booking (especially Turkish Airlines), your luggage is usually checked through and you simply walk to your domestic gate after clearing immigration.

If you booked separate tickets for international and domestic legs, you will need to collect your luggage, pass through customs, recheck your bag at the domestic departure area, and go through security again. Allow a minimum of 3 hours between flights in this scenario, or 2 hours if everything is on one ticket.

Istanbul Airport (IST) is large but well-signposted. Domestic departures are in a separate terminal area connected by the main hall. Follow signs for "Domestic Flights" or "Ic Hatlar" after immigration. Free shuttle buses also run between terminals if needed.

Important: if you are transiting through Istanbul without leaving the airport (connecting directly to an international flight), you generally do not need a Turkish visa. However, if you need to change terminals, collect luggage, or leave the airport for any reason, you will need to clear immigration and will need a visa or visa-free entry right.

Tip

Book your Istanbul-to-Cappadocia flight on the same ticket as your international flight when possible. This ensures luggage is transferred automatically, gives you better protection if flights are delayed, and avoids the need to recheck bags and go through security twice.

Customs Declarations

Turkey allows tourists to bring in personal belongings, clothing, and electronics for personal use without any customs declaration. You can also bring up to 200 cigarettes (or 50 cigars), 1 litre of spirits, and 2 litres of wine duty-free.

If you are carrying more than 10,000 USD (or equivalent in other currencies) in cash, you must declare it at customs. This applies to both entry and exit. Failure to declare can result in confiscation.

When leaving Turkey, note that exporting genuine antiques (items over 100 years old) is strictly prohibited and carries severe penalties. If you purchase carpets, pottery, or other crafts in Cappadocia that look old, keep receipts as proof of purchase. Vendors in tourist areas are familiar with this requirement and can provide documentation.

Prescription medications should be carried in their original packaging with a copy of the prescription. Turkey does not restrict most common medications, but controlled substances should be declared at customs to avoid issues.
